Flotilla 10-20
MS/EP Report for May 2004
  1. There was a beach clean-up at Keansburg beach for international Coastal Clean-up day on April 28th. Members from flotillas 10-02, 10-04, 10-08 and 10-20 participated. We removed over 30 bags of garbage and miscellaneous large pieces of material for a total of about 1000 pounds.
  2. There was an emergency preparedness drill at Westchester County Airprt on May 8th, where several people participated as "victims". Those that participated were: Henry Uiga, Larry West, Judi DiMaio and Greg Marley from 10-20. Art Kramer, DCP Division 10, Gail Venezio, RCO 1SR, Ralph Mumford 6-04, and John Gilmore 10-02. Auxiliary participation was co-ordinated by Tom Cadwallader, 20-05. These hours count toward Marine Safety and Trident Hours. There is going to be a follow-up training session for exercise design this Saturday, 15th May at Westchester County Airport.
  3. Once again, I need to know if anyone has had any MS/EP training or classes and what classes or training people would like to take so we can coordinate with the division. If the flotilla is not interested, I need to let Division know.
MS/EP Report for February 2004
  1. There is a new SO-MS/EP John Gilmore from 10-02.
  2. Training:
    • We are trying to get a handle on who is interested in what training for marine safety. I would like to set up a spreadsheet for our flotilla to include for each member the following:
      • what MS classes you are interested in
      • what MS classes you have completed
    • With this information we can begin to set up training classes (at the division level) to address the members interests. Please provide me with this information ASAP if you are interested.
  3. You may be interested in three courses to start with. They are ICS-100 (incident command), Good Mate and Introduction to Marine Safety. All are available on the web at http://www.auxetrain.org/msep_support_page.htm If we can get enough people in our flotilla who are interested in taking the Intro to Marine Safety exam, we can get together and have a few classes to go over the material. It’s a little more complicated than the Good Mate material. Please let me know.
  4. If you are interested in the Trident Program, I can give you the information on it. It basically involves the following:
    • The Introduction to Marine Safety & Environmental Protection course
    • Advanced course series (four advanced courses in MS/EP)
    • Completion of any four of the Personal Qualifications Standards (PQS’s)
    • Completion of at least four years of sustained support to the MS/EP program
I can give you more information if you need it.
  5. People who may be interested in marine safety, but not in pursuing the Trident program can do other things. We are trying to integrate MSEP with other programs such as vessel examinations, public education, marine dealer visits and operations. In all of these programs, you are in direct contact with boaters and the public. We can incorporate programs like Good Mate, Sea Partners, the National Clean Boating Campaign, etc. It is an excellent chance to impart some marine safety information. I have examples of brochures, etc. that are available if you are interested.
  6. I was asked by our division Emergency Response Coordinator to ask that we fill out the provided form with flotilla facility information. ACTNY would like to have this information available in case of a call-out. Please see me for a copy of the form.
  7. We are working on participation in an International Coastal Clean Up in Keansburg on April 24th. This is in conjunction with the Ocean Conservancy (they have the Good Mate program). For further information contact either myself or check the website: http://www.oceanconservancy.org
  8. I am currently working on a marine safety manual. I would like to have all the information about the programs all in one place, much like the Uniform Procurement Guide. Right now, the information is scattered around and confusing. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
  9. We also have flotilla MS/EP goals and objectives. They are listed below:
    • Communications
      • Ensure all information related to MSEP program is communicated to the flotilla
      • Put this information, as available, on our (new!) web page.
      • Information brought up at flotilla meetings
      • Email distribution of emergency information, if needed (spills, etc.)
    • Training
      • Identify members who want to pursue specific qualifications
      • Incorporate elements of MSEP program into safety patrols/other programs
      • Involve the flotilla in division emergency planning and response
      • Identify and organize other MSEP training that might assist members in expanding their interest in the MSEP program, such as Good Mate and Sea Partners.
    • Education
      • Incorporate MSEP into VE, MDV, PE, and flotilla operations
      • Involve flotilla in outreach programs such as Sea Partners
    • Best Practices
      • Identify what guidance division MSEP can provide
      • Review what other flotillas are doing and what 10-20 can incorporate
      • What are we doing that we can share with others

Any questions, please feel free to contact me.
Respectfully submitted,
Judi DiMaio
