On the rainy Saturday morning of April 8, Members of Flotilla 10-20, and Tom Gomez, Airport Operations Manager, were joined by Director of Auxiliary CDR Elizabeth Young, Division Captain Marge Korteweg, Division Vice Captain and District Staff Officer - Aviation Eric Fields, family members of Peter Perfetti, CDR Young's neice, and all-around nice guy Mike Schiller (10-01) for the raising of the Auxiliary Ensign along with the National Colors on the flagpole near the Operations Center of Essex County Airport (KCDW). This event marks the fifth anniversary of Flotilla 10-20, and recognizes the important role that Essex County Airport plays in our operations. Click on the image for more! April Meeting Date Change! In deference to the various religious holidays occurring on or around our usual meeting date, the Flotilla Commander has postponed the April meeting one week to Thursday, April 20. Please make note of this change. USCG Band in Concert![]() Some members of Division 10, and elsewhere in the District attended a recent concert of the United States Coast Guard Band at Parsippany High School. The USCG Band is one of five Service Bands in the United States, and is the official Musical Representative of the USCG and the Department of Homeland Security. A professional Service Band, they are based at the USCG Academy in New London, Connecticut. The Band can be seen in concert at Leamy Hall on the Academy grounds in their monthly concerts. http://www.uscg.mil/band 10-20 Members Honored10-20 Members Darryl Laxson, Fred Simmons, Frank Tangel and Leo Ward all returned from the District Conference with plaques recognizing them for their participation in aviation activities. 10-20 swept the Captain Rao Awards for most pilot hours, and Leo Ward was recognized for his Observer hours. Bravo Zulu! Get Wet Yet?![]() The Friday before the District Conference was overcast and cold, but at least not wet. Until, that is, over 50 of District 1 Southern's Aviators got in the pool. The reason was the annual requirement for a Swim test and Egress Training. Members were lectured on aircraft egress, first aid, and other subjects. Then it was off to the Academy pool for a 75 yard swim, some in the water training, and boarding a typical liferaft. The emphasis was on teamwork in many of the exercises. Above, National Deputy Department Chief for Operations (DC-Od) Dave Elliot (kneeling in the raft), District Flight Ssfety Officer (DFSO) Steve Trupkin (back to camera), and Director of Auxiliary CDR Elizabeth Young (not in raft yet) participate in the training. Sector New York OPCEN ToursFred Simmons is organizing tours of the Sector New York Operations Center along with CWO Curt Barthel. This is a great opportunity to see what they do there, and how they do it. It is a very interesting tour. Fred is organizing the tours at various times, including weekdays, weekends and evenings. Contact Fred for the details Academy Aviation ClubThe Academy Aviation Club wrote an article (page 4) for the Pterogram the publication of the Ancient Order of the Pterodactyl, an organization which perpetuates the recognition of USCG aviation history and its personnel. In the article, mention was made of the AuxAir training and fam flights which help the cadets experience flight, and possibly help to prepare them for a career as a Coast Guard Aviator. Gold Side at Work![]() Your FSO-FN, Bob Ewing was flying with yours truly, your FSO-CS on patrol the beginning of March, when we came upon this scene in Raritan Bay. What we have here is a New Jersey State Police boat (leading), a 47′ Motor Lifeboat (bottom), two 25′ Defender-Class Response Boats (just above the fantail of the freighter, and between the freighter and the cutter), and the Coast Guard Cutter Sturgeon Bay (far right) escorting a vessel transporting Liquid Hazardous Gas (LHG). The USCG performs about ten of these escorts per year. Publication of this photo has been cleared through CWO Curt Barthel. To give you some idea of the size of the LHG carrier, the Cutter Sturgeon Bay is 140′ long. SF-86 Packages now due!Ok, everyone, the time you've eagerly been awaiting is upon us. All members who are, or plan to be involved in operational missions (which is, for all practical purposes, every member of 10-20) should complete, sign, date, and mail their SF-86 forms, and the forms which accompany it. The SF-86 is the multiple-page form in which you detail the past 7 years of your life. More details will follow in e-mail or on this site. We are planning to hold a training session on the SF-86 forms at the March Flotilla Meeting. District Store InformationThe District Store has been transferred to the new DSO-MA (District Staff Officer - Materials), Gregg Trask. The store is up and running. You may fax your order to 1-518-597-9777, order online at http://store.cgaux1sr.org/shop.asp, or mail your order to: First Southern Materials Center, PO Box 272, Crown Point, NY 12928-0272. You can print out a flyer with this information by clicking H-E-R-E. No phone orders will be taken!FormsPlease make sure you are using the most current forms. All forms are available for download by following the "Forms" link to the left. Please note the new OPFAC numbers for the units we work for. If you have questions, ask! It has come to the attention of the Bridge that some members may be inadvertently “double-dipping” for their hours, putting a mission down on a mission form (7030) and also on their Member Activity (7029) form. While we're hopeful that this is unintentional, it is important to know the difference. When assigned to a mission (flight), all the hours between arrival at the airport and departure for home go on the PIC's 7030 Mission form. That's everything — flight time, lunch, refueling, preflight and postflight. Only the PIC (Pilot in Command) completes a 7030. All crew members are listed on the 7030 for that mission. None of the time above goes on any crew members 7029 form. The only time that goes on the member's 7029 forms is the time needed to get from their home to the airport and back. That's it. If you have any questions, please speak with the FC or VFC. Hours UpdatedThanks to the efforts of the SO-IS, most of the hours submitted are entered. Please check AUXINFO (AUXDATA Cubes) for your time. We will be getting our new FSO-IS up to speed very soon, so watch for an announcement in your e-mail. Training Schedule in Works! The Member Training department is working on a schedule of training for 2006. In the next few months, look for: Aux Air Basic Training, A class on Forms, and a Basic Boating Class. More will be posted when the dates are hammered out. Memorial Service for Wendy KortewegA memorial service in memory of our dear shipmate Wendy Korteweg will be held on Friday, January 6, 2006 at St. Clements Church, Lafayette Ave., Hawthorne, NJ at 1100. A Coast Guard Auxiliary Service will be part of the memorial services. Auxiliarists wishing to attend in uniform are encouraged to wear Service Dress Alpha with Service Dress Bravo as an option. Auxiliarists are asked to arrive by 1030 for a brief review of the ceremony. Division Captains and District Staff Officers are asked to distribute this information broadly. Tom Venezio, Vice Commodore Crossing the BarI received the following message from Pat Ermilio earlier today: From: Uscga1013@aol.com [Pat Ermilio, 10-13] For those who do not know her, Wendy was a vibrant, energetic young woman who was very active in her Flotilla, at the Division, and at the District level in the Auxiliary. She was always working on one project or another, and was involved in the planning of the Division Change of Watch, and the District Conference. As soon as I hear anything, I will inform the Flotilla. Larry West Flotilla Commander New Bridge ListedPlease see the Officers page for the new bridge and staff for 2006. Some important changes have been made, so take note. Help WantedFlotilla 10-20 is in need of someone to coordinate and teach Public Boating Education classes as FSO-PE. Boater Education is a Flotilla's sole source of outside funds. The funds raised by teaching boater education could be used for obtaining more sets of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) such as life rafts, PFDs, EPIRBs, signaling equipment, etc.. In addition, we contribute to boating safety by conducting “preventive SAR” as we teach. The candidate does not have to presently be qualified as instructor, but should qualify in the next six months. On the job training will be provided. This position is best for someone who is knowledgeable and experienced with boating. Other Flotilla Instructors will also teach and assist as needed. Please contact the VFC, Judi DiMaio, if you are interested. Also, if you have an interest in in any of the staff positions, please make your interest known to both the incumbent staff officer and the elected bridge. Assistance is always valuable, and many people move on to other positions in the Auxiliary, leaving behind a void. If we already have an assistant trained in the job, the transition is much smoother. Happy New Year!Well, we didn't quite make 2400 hours flown, but we came awfully close. In any case, Flotilla 10-20 should be proud of the achievements that we have made in 2005. Let us work towards an equally successful and safe 2006. Previous Members PagesJanuary to June, 2004July to December, 2004January to June, 2005July to December, 2005
