Election ResultsFlotilla 10-20 officers for 2005

Division Captain Art Kramer presided over and certified Flotilla 10-20's election of officers for the 2005 term. The Bridge for 2005 is:

  • Flotilla Commander: Rob Silano
  • Vice Flotilla Commander: Larry West
  • Immediate Past FC: Bob Jenny

Left to right: Rob Silano, Bob Jenny and Larry West.

Praise from Activities NY

During the Republican National Convention this past August and September, Flotilla 10-20 Coxswain Darryl Laxson took his vessel facility “Double D” to patrol the Hudson River. On 30 August, the “Double D” was tasked to provide transportation for the Captain of the Port from Activities NY to the USCGC Juniper.

Captain Wiltshire wrote this letter to Laxson, commending the performance of facility and crew. Abourd the “Double D” with Darryl were Flotilla 10-20 members George Lees, Edward Hittinger, Bob McHugh with Vince Iannuzzelli at the helm.

Congratulations to Darryl and his crew.

Flotilla Elections

Your only chance this year to directly influence your leadership in the Auxiliary is coming up at our next Flotilla Meeting, November 11, 2004, which is also Veteran's Day. Every member's vote counts. As of this writing, the candidates are:

  • For Flotilla Commander (FC): Robert Silano
  • For Vice Flotilla Commander (VFC): Lawrence West

New AUXMAN

The new AUXMAN, Commandant Instruction CM 16790.1F has been spotted in the wild! FSO-PB Henry Uiga reports receiving his the last week of October. Keep checking your mailboxes, and yours should be there in the next few weeks.

Water Temperature

It's that time of the year. The water temperature is now officially less than 60°F. Therefore, no flights may be flown outside of gliding distance to land. See the official notice on NETSKEDS.

Ice Patrol Workshop

Flotilla 10-20 will again host the annual Ice Patrol Workshop. This year's event will be held on Saturday, November 13. Pilots with Facilities may request orders to the event and for AFAM flights. Contact Lou Barone through NETSKEDS.

Awards

Flotilla 10-20 continued to present “paychecks” to our members at the October meeting. Of special note was Darryl Laxson's receipt of the Department of Transportation's 9-11 Medal. See our Awards Page for the full rundown.

New Pilot and FacilityFred Simmons and plane

10-20 member Fred Simmons has completed all the necessary requirements and been deisgnated an Auxiliary Co-Pilot. Additionally, his Bellanca Viking has been accepted by the Director as an operational Facility. Fred's next step is to take the SAR checkride, needed for advancement to First Pilot, and on to Aircraft Commander. In the mean time, Fred has been putting in quite a number of hours in the air. Click on the thumbnail for an enlarged image of Fred and his facility.

Congratulations to Fred, as he has been in the Auxiliary less than a year to date, and still managed to jump all the hurdles.

Change of watch date change

The Flotilla 10-20 Change of Watch has been changed to January 8, 2005 at the Brownstone in Paterson. Cost is anticipated to be around $25 per person. Specific details will follow when available, or come by the Flotilla Meeting on November 11, Veteran's Day.

Election Results

  • At District, Charles Sferra was elected DCO, and Tom Venezio VCO. Full results at the District website.
  • At Division, Art Kramer and Marge Korteweg have been re-elected DCP and VCP respectively.

Staff Appointments

Flotilla Commander Bob Jenny has appointed Henry Uiga to the position of Flotilla Staff Officer - Publication (FSO-PB). Additionally, he has appointed Fred Simmons as Flotilla Staff Officer - Public Education (FSO-PE). Congratulations to Henry and Fred on their new appointments.

Also, Flotilla Staff Officer - Communications Services (FSO-CS) Larry West has accepted the position of Staff Officer - Communications (SO-CM) for Division 10, taking over the position that 10-20 member Mark Sherman has held as Mark moves on to other things.

Get out and vote!

George Bush and John Kerry are not the only ones running for office this November. November 11 is also the time for the Flotilla 10-20 annual election of officers. The offices of Flotilla Commander and Flotilla Vice Commander are up for election. As of this writing, there have been no declarations for office. If you want to run for office, you must contact FC bob Jenny ASAP.

Anyone intersted in running must have the following minimum qualifications:

  • Member for one year as of the date of nomination (may be waived by DIRAUX)
  • Successful completion of either the Auxiliary Administrative Procedures Course (online, open book test), or the now cancelled Auxiliary Administration (AUXMIN) specialty course.
  • Qualified and current in one of the Auxiliary's programs. This includes: VSCs, MDVs, ATONs, Instructor, Boat Crew, Coxswain, Air Observer, Pilot, etc.

Also, along with the Elected officers, the Appointed Flotilla Staff Officer's term expires December 31. If you are interested in volunteering for any of the Staff Officer positions, there will be handouts at the October Flotilla meeting detailing the duties of each. After the elections are completed at the November meeting, the member interested in a staff officer position can approach the new elected officers and volunteer their service.

And don't forget to vote in our National Election on November 2.

“Loose lips sink ships”

It may be a slogan from an old war poster from the Big One, but it is just as relevant today, especially to the Auxiliary, in light of our new and expanded missions. Please read the new Policy from the Director of Auxiliary, First Southern Region.

Congratulations!

Congratulations to Darryl Laxson for achieving Auxiliary First Pilot status. Also, congratulations are in order for Fred Simmons for his new Auxiliary wings as Co-Pilot.

September Meeting will be the Annual Picnic

FC Bob Jenny has announced that the September Flotilla Meeting will be held in conjunction with our Annual Picnic on Sunday, September 12, 2004. See story immediately below for more information.

Flotilla Picnic!

The annual Flotilla 10-20 picnic will again be held at the American Legion hall in Little Falls, NJ (Leo Ward's Post) on Sunday, September 12, 2004. Rain or shine, as Leo has arranged for the indoor room should the weather not co-operate. The Post is at: 55 Van Ness Ave Little Falls, NJ 07424. Leo warns us that there is another festival going on in town that day, and the normal routes may be blocked or very congested. Arrive early!

Members are asked to contact Flotilla Commander Bob Jenny to confirm their attendance. Please feel free to bring a dish to share. If you can't think of anything, bring what you did last year. If you didn't bring anything, call Bob for ideas!

TCT update

The TCT (Team Co-Ordination Training) requirement for new Boat Crew qualifications has changed. As of now, newly-qualified Boat Crew must take the full-day, 8-hour TCT course before December 31 of the same year, or they will be placed in REYR status effective Jauary 1, and remain in REYR until the TCT requirement is fulfilled.

The TCT course is a five-year requirement. The full-day course must be taken every five years. Be aware of the date you last took the training, so you can be proactive in taking it before you are placed in REYR Status, and cannot receive orders.

TCT is not a requirement for air operations. However, like the similar CRM (Crew Resource management), it is an interesting, valuable learning experience for all. Even if you don't need it, try to get into a class at your earliest opportunity.

Printed AUXMAN Update

The Director of Auxiliary reports that the printed Auxiliary Manual is on track for distribution to individual Auxiliarists in the late September/early October timeframe. Look for it in your mailbox then! In the meantime, see below for a link to the on-line version.

Looking for something here?

In an effort to shorten download times, this page has been split, effective July 1. Only the most recent and important information has been carried over, and that will eventually be removed from this page. To access the members page for the first half of 2004, Click Here!

Important Communications from the Director

CDR John Felker, DIRAUX D1SR has issued a few important communications in the past two weeks. Links to these communications are below, with a brief synopsis. Please take a moment to look at these items, as there is important information for all Auxiliarists.

It's a good idea to regularly check the Chief Director's website, The DIRAUX D1SR website, and the District 1 Southern News Page for important updates. These links are always on the left of your browser when you are browsing the 10-20 website.

Flotilla Picnic

The annual Flotilla 10-20 picnic is to be held at the Little Falls American Legion Post on Sunday September 12. This is the same location as 2003. Please contact Bob Jenny by August 23rd, and let him know if you are coming, how many guests you will be bringing, and what dish you will be bringing with you, if any. If in doubt, say "yes" anyway so there is enough food. If you don't know what to bring, and you brought something last year, bring that again!

Flotilla Newsletter online!

Our recently appointed FSO-PB, Henry Uiga has ben busy getting out the first issue of "Plane Facts", the official newsletter of Flotilla 10-20. For your perusal, you can download a copy, in Adobe PDF format H-E-R-E.

New AUXMAN Published!

The Chief Director announced the publication of the new, revised AUXMAN, COMDTINST M16790.1F. The new manual replaces all previous versions and changes to those versions. I have provided a link below for you to access the new AUXMAN. Be aware that it is a very large download (20.7 megabytes), and those of you with dial-up or other slow connections may wish to wait for the printed version to reach you via the US Postal Service.

ADVISORY - MONITORING REQUESTS OF THE AUXILIARY

Please read the following words of caution from the Chief Director.

1. A web-based Auxiliary District store site recently received
an order request from an overseas source for Auxiliary uniform
and correspondence items.

	A. The nature and validity of the order were quite questionable.

	B. Rightly so, the order was not filled and appropriate Coast
	Guard offices were quickly notified.

2. This points to the ongoing need for internal organizational
vigilance to guard against questionable/suspicious requests and
actions from external sources as detected by Coast Guard Auxiliary
personnel and units.

3. Every Auxiliarist has a chain of leadership and communication
as well as a Director of Auxiliary (DIRAUX). Both the chain and
DIRAUX should be notified as quickly as possible whenever such
questionable/suspicious circumstances are encountered (and obviously
when operating under specific mission orders, the Coast Guard
unit exercising operational control should immediately be notified).

3. Recognizing that there is often a fine line between what may
seem questionable/suspicious and what is actually innocuous,
prudence dictates always erring on the side of caution.

4. Auxiliarists are urged to always keep these basic considerations
in mind during the conduct of their service.
