Flotilla 10-20 Patch

The Symbols in the Patch

When I designed the patch I wanted to include several items that were symbolic of Air Station Caldwell, and the job we do. This took some thought, but I believe that I have produced something that tells our story, without needing an explanation.

To start, there is the gold outer border. This symbolizes the "Gold Side" of the US Coast Guard, of which the Auxiliary is a part. The dark blue background behind the lettering represents the seas over which the Coast Guard and Auxiliary patrol. The stars can represent several things. They are similar to the four stars seen on the Air Station Cape Cod patch, and they can represent the four cornerstones of the Auxiliary - Operations, Recreational Boating Safety, Public Edication, and Fellowship.

The silver rope represents the Auxiliary, the rope theme indicating that it binds us together. Inside the rope is a white field — the same color the USCG uses for their cutters, boats and aircraft with a primary misson of Search and Rescue. On that is a “reversed” Coast Guard racing stripe, commonly used to symbolize the Auxiliary vice the Active Duty side.

The Bald Eagle is the symbol of our country, and represents the job we do. Watching, observing, seeing all that we can. Finally “Eyes For The First” is a motto that directly describes our mission.

It took a while to work out the details, but once together and in thread, I am happy with the result. Thanks go to Moritz Embroidery for doing a wonderful job on these patches. I didn't even ask to have the Eagle's feathers stitched like feathers!
